Sounds like your friend didn't do his homework as to the competence of the 
builder before he took the plunge with him. I've seen many a homeowner 
remodel/self contract turn out much worse than what an incompetent licensed 
contractor would do.

To judge any/every contractor by what your friend is going through seems to 
be a bit foolish and unfair IMHO.
