[Greenbuilding] [BULK] Green un-garage

A friend of mine, who lives far enough out in the woods that his
neighbors can't see it, buys an old 40 foot truck trailer. It makes a
perfect shed if you don't mind the ramp at the door, sturdy, lockable.
When he moves, he just sells the trailer. Shipping containers
(Unmodded) are also a sellable item.

Subject: [BULK] [Greenbuilding] Green un-garage
Importance: Low

My wife and I plan to build a green home in the near future.
We're now thinking of ways to cut costs on some things so we can
afford the things we really want. We originally planned on a
detached garage, but it became apparent that we really don't
need one. I don't think I'd want one now, even if money was no
object. We don't keep a car in our garage now, as it is; we use
it as a workshop and for storage. I would still like to have
that capability at our new house. One option is to buy a new or
used (greener) shed.

But that got me thinking that there might be other interesting
green oportunities. One thing that caught my eye is used
shipping containers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Containerization).
Looks like a great opportunity to reuse. Wonder if you could
put on a living roof? And being of the engineering persuasion,
I can see having fun modding the heck out of it. Does anyone
have experience with this sort of thing?

I'd love to hear about any other cool green workshop/storage
solutions, too.

Thanks,
    - Ian.
