A while back, I was reading the news, and realized that wind power has
been growing at something like 30% a year for a while. I was also
reviewing my IRA investments, and thinking "Hmm. 30% per year industry
     growth. Worth investigating".
Now, there are several "Green" investment funds, like Winslow Green
Growth (WGGFX) which I have a stake in. Sounds great! But if you look
at their top holdings, they are in financials, coffee, and tech stocks,
nothing about Solar or Wind and so forth. Maybe these companies don't
pollute much, or promote fair trade, but none of them are wind power
     companies that I can see.
I took on a little project - looked up the 5 largest wind farm projects
that I could locate on the web, then began tracing back ownership
through news sources, financial data sites like finance.yahoo, and so
on. In all the cases I studied, wind farms were nonpublicly traded
companies, or wholly owned subsidiaries of global giants. There were a
few utilities that owned big wind farms, that as a whole weren't making
much money at all. One standout was Goldman Sachs (GS), which is a
giant financial that invests in all kinds of things, but most of them
are very profitable. They are invested heavily in wind power, and my
purchase of their stock earlier this year has paid off well. The
utilities were dogs, and made up for any gains I made in GS.
Other than that, I had no luck finding any way to invest directly in
wind power companies. Has anyone else looked into this?
