[Greenbuilding] [BULK] Re: Lauan wood

Lauan is a generic term for plywood made from tropical
forests. It generally comes from wood logged in SE
Asia, a region known both for its devastating
deforestation and for its illegal logging practices.
Lauan should be avoided at all costs. For some
applications, other products are readily available.
For floor covering during renovation jobs, we use
masonite, which we actually found FSC-certified from a
local lumber yard.

For the sake of orangutans and other endangered
creatures, it's best to avoid lauan and any other
tropical lumber products (unless they are
FSC-certified). Sadly, many products, including baby
cribs of all things, come from endangered forests.
Sometimes they even claim to be "maple" or some other
American wood, but are actually endangered lumber
(they even sometimes put "maple-like" and phrases like
that in the small print.

Best,

Bill Updike
