A swamp cooler (evaporative cooler) is pretty much standard equipment
there.  There are two kinds - direct and indirect (or "Sealed").
Generally, the indirect are said to be less efficient, but less liekly
to soak the house with moist air and bring pollen and germs.  I don't
know why everyone in Phoenix doesn't have legionaire's disease already,
with these swamp coolers sucking in wet air through a filter catching
every bit of airborne mold food. 

I wonder how common the indirect systems really are?
