After a gazzilion years of building and remodeling I did my own home and was
appalled to realize (you don't notice these things until you turn out the
lights...) that many of the major kitchen appliances I selected--with strong
emphasis on the yellow sticker--have significant parasitic loads--the Asko
dishwasher (among the top rated for both water use and electricity) has
several spacey little lights that are on in perpetuity; the KitchenAid range
has another blasted clock with serious backlighting. I think all modern
fridges have a resistance circuit that works intermittently to keep the
gasket resilient (wasn't it LG that ran afoul of e* because of the way they
finessed documenting this function), not to mention the requisite ice maker.
There should be a requirement to have a switch to turn off non essential
functions, to earn the e* rating.
