[Greenbuilding] Removing tar/mastic

   Depending on the year your house was built, keep in mind there may have been
   asbestos containing tiles at one time and the mastic itself used during
   those years has the potential to contain asbestos as well (generally it's
   low - about 2% ACM.)

   If  it's  possible for you to leave it alone that may be the best (and
   easiest) choice. Removing it is tedious and messy to say the least.
