We have two windows where we have been using
panels that fit into the window well snugly for a
year and this has not been a problem for us.
Other's mileage may certainly vary. I used the
word "snugly" rather than "tightly" because they
pull in and out. The panel is 3" thick (4 layers
of 3/4 inch insulating board).
When we built out our walls to 9 inches by adding
a new wall 5.5 inches inside of the existing
exterior walls, we framed our window wells with
wood.
