hi folks

if you do go the quilted curtain option there are a couple of other things that you can do to increase efficiency.

In the house I grew up in, my dad put up pelmets above the windows - they are a box like structure that hides the curtain rail and the top of the curtain, and it also stops the flow of air between the window and the curtain. What happens if you don't have this is that the air between the curtain and the window cools and falls down to the floor drawing more warm air from the top of the room. this sets up a flow of air that can create cool drafts at floor level and significant loss of heat from the room.

the second thing is an idea that I want to try out. take old pure wool sweaters that you don't want any more, wash them in the washing machine with hot water to felt them, then you can cut them up into usable pieces and sew them together to create a quilt or use them to line the back of a cotton curtain etc. the wool has good insulation and fire retardant properties and if you are creative it would also be an interesting decorative feature??!!
