I mentioned this to Bruce privately, but for the record, I'd say finding
a good local insulation company is worth a mint. Doing the best of jobs
in the field often requires a range of techniques and materials. A lot
of subtle building science issues can pop up. Unfortunately, finding
insulation companies that know what they're doing and don't just try to
sell you on poorly installed fiberglass batts can be difficult. Even
greener types, cellulose installers for example, may not realize the
Global Warming Potential of the propellants in their foam system which
they might use to insulate tricky details... Ideally it's a
two-way-street, where you get to know your contractor and educated each
other about the details of doing a good job, since (if you work at it)
you'll know more building science than the average insulation installer
after a while...
I mostly pull out my blower for small jobs that aren't worth bothering a
contractor for.
Warmly, Keith
