We have been following all the suggestions in Joe's book http://www.buildingsciencepress.com/books.asp?CatID=1 for over 12 years with great performance success and no problems. We use 2x6 @ 24 o.c., one top plate, minimal cripples, drywall clips, insulated or open headers, no sheathing, 5/8" drywall, dens-pak cellulose insulation, and 1" to 2" ridged insulation on the outside of studs. For shear we use let-in diagonal bracing or Simpson straps. http://www.strongtie.com/products/categories/wallbracing.html . We have received very high Energy Star Ratings and now have two LEED Certified Homes. Occasionally on larger homes with open floor plans and lots of windows, we integrate shear walls. http://www.strongtie.com/products/strongwall/raised-first.html
