On the other hand, I know a guy who lost every CFL in his house after a
lightning storm. Cost him probably $200, back when they were over $10
each..

I just keep a can in the house into which goes dead batteries and dead 
CFLs.  Then, once every three years or so, I take them to hazardous
waste.
