I've wondered about this. How can a lightsource be efficient when it
is creating so much waste heat?

Yes, there's hype and the current ones are low efficacy, but I do
think they are catching up with the hype. Each iteration of LED and
lighting trade shows has improved products out there. Our lighting
organization here in NYC (DLFNY.org) has sponsored a couple of LED
mini-trade shows and we are actively thinking of doing them annually
because of the rapid developments.

My current assessment (and others') is that they are very useful and
efficient for specialty situations and display lighting. They are
almost -- but not quite -- viable for fixtures like recessed cans
because they max out at around 60 watt equivalent.

I'm using them in a demonstration green kitchen installation for
undercabinet and cove lighting. They're still more expensive than
halogen or fluorescent equivalents, but I expect that within a couple
of years that will change.

I'll try to post a report after LightFair in May.
