  EU is in fact an acronym of European Union not an abbreviation of the word 
Europe. This might have caused problems not so long ago when there were 
still European countries not yet  in the European Union (EU) but not so much 
now.

A few years ago whilst enquiring about an EU issue of a French consular 
division in North America I was a little surprised to speak to a Dutch 
person there and asked if they were working for the French Consulate or were 
local to the office? The answer was that they were working for the EU and 
that the only reason there are individual European countries offices still 
in North America was due to North Americans not really understanding that 
there are few borders left in Europe and that North Americans didnt "get"  
"Europe" yet, most of them still thinking of Europe as having roadblocks 
between countries whereas these days there are no borders one can drive from 
Sweden to Sicily or Portugal without being asked for a passport.
