[Greenbuilding] Poltergeists??

Hi all:

Okay, I hate mysteries when I can't figure them out.

I just borrowed a bathroom scale from a neighbour to weigh some boxes for Africa, and all I got was an
<Error> msg when I tried. I thought maybe the batteries were going, so took it back and she had another
one, which she kindly gave me. (Bamboo floor, no rugs)

Same thing happened. I took it out on the (wooden) porch and tried again, and it seemed to work out there
with some coaxing, but it was too bright to see the numbers, even if I shaded them.

I brought it into the kitchen (tile floor) and found it would work, again with coaxing, and only once unless I
picked it up and put it down again.

They both worked fine at her place before she gave them to me, and while we didn't check the first one
when I brought it back, the second one needed some coaxing again, but then worked as expected.

This is too weird! Any guesses as to what's the cause? I know this is really off topic, but there are
representatives of so many disciplines here, and just some creative thinkers, so hoping an answer will be
obvious to someone.
TIA,
~marilyn
