I've had little luck with pouring things into the water heater, and
remember, your drinking water supply will have residue from whatever
chemical you add for a long time. Make sure it is something you don't
mind drinking. BTW she asked about a gas water heater. The electrics
have a better cleanout hole, but the elements start to burn out rapidly
as soon as they get gunked up with calcium.

Plain white vinegar dissolves lime buildup, though it would take a
strong solution and lots of soaking for it to work. Would replacing the
heating element solve the problem?
