yes, the model # I referred to should have included the suffix "MS" for
massage shower -- by definition it meets the 2.5 gal rule-but also is
appreciably more restrictive than the new, stock, Kohler unit that it
replaced.  

This admittedly unscientific observation is corroborated by the unsolicited
remarks from The Other Member of my household.  

That's what made it so remarkable-a surprisingly vigorous massage action, at
a noticeably low flow rate, and a filter to boot.
