Now here's one of those situations where y'all (read: "Murricans") could
benefit from using metric rather than Imperial units where as Alan "D'Oh!"
Abrams has demonstrated, mixing cubic feet, gallons and percentages can
yield a confoosing mongrel stew.

POINT WELL TAKEN!

(Using rounded river stone and larger sized stone would likely result in
an even greater volume of water per litre of stone but that should be
verified with your own tofu tub. )

Simple. Right ?

HMMM--my intuition sez--whether the stones were large or small--as long as
they were all the same size and shape, the ratio of solid to void would not
change...however, if the stones were a mix of large and small, the net void
volume would be less...I hear RT running back to his well stocked kitchen...

BTW--this seeming nonsense has a real application--designing receptors for
on site stormwater management, including substrates for porous pavement, and
"in ground gutters" (gravel filled trenches at the eave lines). The local
spec is to handle a 1-1/2 inch --uh--make that-- 38mm -- rain event.

So whether the void factor is 38% or 30% represents a whole lot of
shoveling...saved or expended.
