How about 'compostables'? That's a good one-size-fits-all word. As a
general rule of thumb, "Anything that comes out of the ground can go
back into the ground." But pine needles could use a little help in
becoming compost. I understand that putting them in a metal garbage can
and hitting them with a weed wacker does a good job of chopping up the
leaves and needles. An ordinary lawn mower can be used to shred
newspapers and such.

The stuff a person rakes up from under trees is called leaf mulch or,
occasionally, duff in this area.
One year I raked up one corner of the yard and hauled 8 to 10 large
wheelbarrow loads to the garden, and dug it in. (yes, by hand.)
Subsequently 72 apricot seeds sprouted. :-) Tough little trees, those.

Cheers,

Chris Green.
