A machete and a log are what folks use in most of the world. I have a tool
like a machete called a brush hook that has a machete blade that ends with a
hook that curves back. The hook is sharp too, making it easy to, say, weed
brush from a clump of blueberries. It would do the trick. I'm too lazy to chop
my mulch that way, though.
