When you all talk about hand splitting no one has mentioned Hedge (Osage Orange) a fabulously long burning hot wood. Elm is hard to split too. I've used a nasty smelling loud mechanical splitter for years now; hate the machine, but it does the job. Could not do it by hand. Save the oak for that. Sacie
