As it so happens, I was just grabbing some late lunch and I happened to
have a 2 litre tub of washed 1.5" rounded river stones and a 2 litre tub
of washed 0.375" rounded river stones (aka "pea gravel" (which is distinct
from the "pee" traps that Californicators have in their hot tubs) handy.

So naturally, I weighed the two tubs of stones and measured how much water
it would take to fill the voids remaining in the two tofu tubs.

2 litres of 1.5" stone :
Dry weight = 3585 grams (+/- a few g) (or 1.79 kg per litre)
Amount of water added to fill 2 litre tub: 890 ml. (or 445 ml of void per
litre of 1.5" stone)

2 litres of 0.375" stone:
Dry weight = 3590 grams (essentially the same as above, 1.79 kg per litre
of stone)
Amount of water added to fill 2 litre tub to rim: 830 ml. (or 415 ml of
void per litre of 0.375" stone)

For those who have faulty memories and cannot remember everything that
they read on this List,
by way of review, in the archives Re: FACKS 'N' FIGGERS October 31, 2007

I'll leave it to others to evaluate the on-the-ball-edness of Alan's
voice-capable intuition.

Me ? I've got more pressing matters to attend to (like pressing food into
my voice-capable orifice).
