IMHO We could learn much from the Menonites and the Amish. They have opted out of the life style that modern society has built and they seem to get along just fine. The Amish around here don't own automobiles or have electricity in their homes. Bicyles and horse drawn buggies are their main tramsportation. As an aside, I once saw some Amish teenagers drag racing their horse drawn buggies. They were grinning from ear to ear.

I don't care too much for some of their beliefs, but those Menonites that I know personally are good people.

Because that could be the first step toward many people realizing
that, "hey, I could design and build my own small, natural and
efficient dwelling myself!" and if enough people followed through on
that it, discovering how much more fulfilled they can through self
reliance and with 'less,' it would mean the collapse of the
residential building industry, much of the architecture profession,
the building supplies industry, the real estate business, a lot of
the mortgage industry (though they've done a pretty good job of
getting close to the point of collapse themselves!) and give lie to
the fantasy that we can solve our energy and climate problems with
high-tech solutions and make a lot of money doing it!
