     My very amateur understanding is that those forests which used  
to have glaciers on top of them are evolved not to have worms.  Those  
which never had a mile of ice on top are evolved to have worms.

     That's not to say that all worms are created equal, and that you  
can't introduce invasive worms into non-post-glacier forests.  But as  
I understand it, you shouldn't introduce *any* worms into post- 
glacier forests.

     I suppose that Dan Hemenway is probably right, and a tropical  
species would be contained by the cold weather, but living things can  
surprise you...
