I actually prefer the wicking type--with a antimicrobial filter. The
other spinning type puts everything into the air. So if your water is
hard, you get white dust, and if there is anything growing in it, that
flies around too. The other advantage of the one i have is that is
that you can set the desired humidity. I have major allergies, so i
like it to be controlled. Above 50% allows dust mites to flourish,
below 40, I get dry sinuses. I don't believe the other types offer
this feature. I think it was around 30 dollars (US).
  Of course if we want humidity the low tech way, we  just put wet
washcloths on the radiators and open the bathroom door when we shower.
