Oona-
I can do my best to point to resources from MA, and I apologize if this
isn't exactly the assistance you need... I can't tell what will help or
not. It depends how new you are to green building.
I always recommend people say hello to their local green building resource
center if there is one in the area. And you have one at the Global Green
Resource Center in Santa Monica. Aside from being a great place to see and
play with greener products (which I find usually leads more people to
understand the items and want to purchase!), these folks are usually well
connected to whose providing what services in the area.
I don't want to make assumptions, so I will also suggest it is a good idea
to check in with your local USGBC chapter? Forgive me if that is too
obvious! You can look up listed member companies on the USGBC site. (And
yes, one day we hope to have many ratings so you can get recommendations
from your peers on our site...) You might also want to get in touch with
the local EGB, or Emerging Green Builders, chapter. This group accepts
individuals, while only whole companies can sign up for the USGBC. You will
find many folks from smaller companies in this group.
Another idea I like is to go visit green building retailers. We have a list
of these folks posted on our site under "Where to Buy," but I can also list
some of the ones here for you that are in CA. I know some aren't in your
area though... I will not list the ones I know are in the SF area or
further South to keep this shorter... But check the list - I could be
wrong. I grew up in NY!
-Alternative Building Center (Eureka)
-Discover Flooring (West Hollywood)
-Eco Design Resources (San Carlos)
-Green and Greener (Ventura)
-Green Building Products (LA)
-Green Goods (Atascadero)
-LivingGreen (they have 2 locations in the LA area - one moved recently, so
call first! We have to update our list)
Other resources could include:
-The Who's Green book by Ecotone Publishing. This directory of service
providers grows each year. It is available only in print from the
publisher.
-Web sites that list green service providers. I can happily share some
resources if you'd like to write. I know a few choices (and many of us are
happy to support our peers!), but I always worry about forgetting and
offending someone if I just list them off the top of my head. We are
working on a comprehensive list which we will publish once we feel more
confident in the work. We found 70 retailers in our travels, but we still
met 3 more at West Coast Green, and I think they were a little hurt we
hadn't found them before we posted!
-There are also a number of green living sites and resources. I can help
with these too, but again our research is not complete.
-Allison

hi,
i'm looking for contracters in l.a. with green/environmentally
friendly practices.
i work for a real estate company here in downtown l.a. and we want to
be able to refer our clients to good people to do things such as:
flooring, carpentry, painting and larger projects such as building
loft mezzanines, etc...
personal referrals from fellow greenbuilders in the area would be great!
peace,
oona mekas
