Ipe is extremely hard, has to be drilled to be
nailed or screwed, and would be sort of painful to use. Oh, and it's not
available in 2x lumber I don't think.

Ipe is available in just about any dimention.

Me, I'm having a difficult time picturing the situation so it's hard for me 
to come up with some solutions.
