I'd talk to a lawyer before paying this guy one cent. You may end up
owing him for a few materials, but don't be too quick to send him
anything until everything has been considered. Likely any insurance you
collect may be offset by the materials cost and he'll get compensated at
that time. Keep a log of all of your time and materials spent fixing
the problem, you may be able to collect from his insurance company for
that. When I had a fire, though, they said that any work I did myself
would only be compensated for materials, not time, and only with
reciepts. They pay professionals, insurance companies don't trust
homeowners because of variable results.
