Here in New Mexico, it has been quite common to spray polyurethane foam
over adobe. It is one of the few ways to insulate adobe, without
furring, etc. PU foam is vapor permeable and waterproof, good
characteristics to have, and it seems to stick to adobe (and everything
else!) just fine. I've not heard of any long term problems, but there
may be some that I've not heard of. Although it's petroleum based, the
long term energy savings seems worth it.
