I would disagree that collector components would be damaged, most
collectors can withstand stagnation and get quite hot in that situation.
However, I did fail to mention in an earlier post: I was not considering
the possibility of an open-system install (where your house water
pressure was running through your collectors, maybe 60 psi instead of 12
psi or so). As John mentioned, pipes are rated for both pressure and
temperature. On solar systems, one has to install lower pressure relief
valves (typically set at 30 psi) instead of those on a standard water
heater that might be at 150 psi.
