     When I did the first, small house, I buried pipes direct.

     When I did the second, larger, addition, I learned to bury a 
chase, through which I can pull pipe.  That way I can replace pipe as 
needed.

     The only exception was the pipe through my berm, where I wanted 
maximum heat transfer, and so maximum surface contact.  But even 
there I laid two lengths of four-inch "elephant pipe", just in case.
