David:  (A "cdh" answer):
YEP !,   but NOT in any way you are talking about.  I think what you are describing is IMPOSSIBLE !
(Physics doesn't change).   Using a "convential fireplace", (open front, etc), I have (on two different houses that wife, and I, have lived in), built in a (low cost):  "Outside Cold Air RE-HEATING"  system of small blower, blowing in outside "cold" air through the Fireplace, AND up a short ways up the chimney, and back down, and (again) through the "Firing Chamber,  and OUT into Living Area !     My wife shouts:  "Carroll, IT IS TOO HOT IN HERE!".
1)  small blowers, 110 VAC or 12 VDC, can be obtained on the Internet, with a 1-800 phone call, with a Credit Card.
2)  short sections of PVC piping, 2 or 3 inch Diameter: can hook it all together.  Use solid Galv. 4 inch water pipe, INSIDE FIRING CHAMBER, of FIREPLACE.
NOTE: On  E-Mail request, I can forward a short "Ben Franklin's sayings" about:  HEATING WITH WOOD.   Wife, and I, now retired  in an ALL ELECTRIC house, and I have plans to do it here,  (with small  wood burning:   "Cabin Heater", placed in the forced air ELECTRIC air  heating system.
Sincere      inquiries answered.   /s/ Carroll H.

Is there such a thing a an eco fireplace? I'm working on a weekend
house where we'd like to add one for ambiance (as opposed to for
utility, though it should of course not waste its heat). I've so far
been researching efficiently ventilated wood burners (advantages:
