Ian,

I've got 2 Windward III's just delivered, waiting to be installed, but I don't yet know the answer to your question. I intend to use one of the switches to control the fan power, so I may never know whether what you propose is possible. If you are looking for an efficient outdoor (wet) fan with light, Hampton Bay's Lighthouse was the most efficient I could find. Home Depot no longer carries the Lighthouse except in Canada where the website incorrectly shows the fan as indoor only, but you can order it directly from King of Fans by calling Dullys Gonzales at (800)330-3267 ext 4060.
