Not sure which component of the enclosures you're referring to but
diverted-from-the-wastestream-tempered-glass-salvaged-from-patio-door-insulating-glass-units
(DFTWTGSFPDIGU) is an excellent material that can do anything clear PVC
can do and do it better.
If it's for clear insert panels for railings, it should be fine. Tempered
glass takes gobs of physical abuse and comes back ticking. (I could tell
you stories of glass abuse!)
If it's for overhead canopies, it should be fine for that too since if
temper glass should get broken somehow, it breaks into a bazillion
harmless small chunks rather than dangerous shards. Your Codes may require
glass with a plastic laminate layer for overhead glazing though, the
reasoning being that the plastic keeps the glass chunks from raining down
if the glass should get broken.
If you're in the Alam Abrans neighbourhood (Land 'o Shrub, Washington DC)
I heard that he has a pile of such glass available, for free, as such
glass often is.
