[Greenbuilding] Hybrid Living Machines

Does anyone have experience with living machines? I'm working on a  
project that will have a hybridized version of a living machine,  
meaning that it will have a combination of conventional wastewater  
treatment with a constructed wetland to further clean and "polish"  
the water. One of the biggest questions that keeps coming up is the  
extent to which a living machine needs conventional pre-treatment.  
There are plenty of "pure" living machines that work fine and a  
number of hybridized living machines that were designed to be  
permitted by environmental health departments and regional water  
quality control boards.

Any firsthand experience here on the list?
