[Greenbuilding] Recommendations for stand-alone dehumidifiers?

Hi all,
We've recently gotten two quotes for replacing our HVAC system in our
new/old smaller house. Air quality is the big issue for us since we
both have allergies (pollen, dust and mold) and I have major
sensitivities. We also have six cats and live in a humid climate
(Austin, TX area). Apparently, since our house is so small, some
carpentry work would have to be done first in order to cram a
complete unit in that includes a dehumidifying AC/air cleaner and AC
unit.
We've had quotes of around $7,000 from two different companies so
far. At this point, the big issue is having to do carpentry for a
new unit. We already have a UV light set-up in the unit, and
washable filters which I try to keep clean. Energy efficiency is an
issue too, of course.
At this point, I'm inclined not to spend that much money on a new
unit for this house, and am thinking of buying a stand alone
dehumidifier for the days when we really need it. Didn't want to do
that, but considering the cost comparisons, that option is looking
better all the time.
Can anybody recommend one? Or have other ideas for a small home
(1700 sq. ft. one-story)?
Thanks.
