[Greenbuilding] Carbon offset - pay to airline while buying tickets

I was surprised to find British Airways allow you to buy Carbon offset while booking a ticket. I don't know if other do too.

I purchased the offset, even though it was via a large finance institution (we all know how green and caring they are!), my logic being that it's good to let airlines know that people want to do this.

Although one wonders at the logic of all this, doesn't it depend on how the money used to pay the offset was "earned"?
