[Greenbuilding] Solar thermal with sand storage

Is there anyone with experience designing/building/operating a solar
water heating system using sand as the storage medium? Any advice,
recommendations, pitfalls? Any reason not to do this in a coastal
temperate location (think Vancouver, Seattle...)?
