My buddies up in BC (British Columbia, Canada) are quick to point out they are "Americans", too.  North Americans.  They refer to where I live as "the States".

Have you ever seen that silly movie "Canadian Bacon"?  It is a great spoof on our (States') government and our relationship with Canada.  The Pentagon warriors want the President (Alan Alda) to declare war on Canada and one reason is "they have amassed 90% of their population within 100 miles of our border".
