It is very natural for us to look at the coldest months,
and coldest design temperatures, when assessing the
feasibility of a heating system. However, with systems
that vary in their efficiencies, relative to the ambient
temperature, it is necessary to look at the full heating
season performance efficiency, not just at the most
extreme month, or worse, just the lowest expected
temperature. This is the case with Solar heating, and
it is also the case with air source heat pumps. To put
it more succinctly, what a milder climate has as winter,
Anchorage gets as both its spring and its fall, plus it
has a ~1000HDD summer. Therefore the saving,
from using an efficient heat pump (or Solar heating),
will be far greater in Anchorage, than in a milder
climate, even if the darn thing does nothing all
winter. That is why Solar space heating makes
far more economic sense, in a cold cloudy
state, like Michigan, than it does in a state like
Virginia, where there is a lot more sun, and
the winter is only as cold as Michigan's
spring or fall.
