I have a twist timer on the electric line to the pump. When I
anticipate that it will be cold, I give it a twist and it goes for as
many hours as I twisted (a maximum of six).

If it's starting to get cold and the sun is down, twist. If
it's starting to get cold and it's dawn on a clear day, cup of tea
and let the sun do it.
