Totally disgusted about the waste of several designs, I've just 
looked at 2008 AIA house awards given, to quote them,

  to recognize the best in housing design and promote the importance 
of good housing as a necessity of life, a sanctuary for the human 
spirit and a valuable national resource.

Two are huge vacations homes, neither with even the pretense of a nod 
towards green building.  If you can ignore the architectese of the 
descriptions however, several are beautiful, interesting and 
green.  Flato as always, has done a particularly lovely house.  Check 
these out.
