Another no-brainer: any new ductwork - mastic the seams don't tape them.
Taping can lose 10-20% in the walls. AFM Safecoat's Dynoflex mastic is
low-VOC, low odor.

1. Make it small - don't add any rooms in a renovation, maybe turn some
space into unheated mudrooms, storage areas.
2. Make the walls somewhere between R-25 and R-30 (applies to the Midwest
where R-19 is the Norm) or more for more northerly climates
3. Make the roof approx. R-60
4. Orient the house to catch solar energy in the winter, and shade it out in
the summer
5. Install energy star rated appliances and high efficiency HVAC
Too bad I only get 5, the next 5 would be:
6. Superior caulking and weatherstripping
7. Delete the clothes dryer (this could cut energy use in an average family
by 10- 20%!) and make the clothesline easy to use from the laundry
8. good quality windows with moveable insulation panels
9. programmable thermostats with night setback
10. foundation perimeter insulation

Importance: Low
If you were doing a serious renovation, what are the top 5 things you would
do to maximize a home's energy efficiency?
