If you have a LED bulb at 20 to 60 lumens per watt, compared to a CFL at
50 to 70 lumens per watt, these are both beat out by a regular linear
fluorescent you can buy at any home depot.  Any fluorescent with a
linear T-8 or T-5 bulb and an electronic ballast will be over 90 L/W and
up to 104 L/W, nearly double the efficiency.  And you won't gulp at the
cost either. 

"To save the planet, we must get rid of CFL's and replace them with
efficient T-5's and T-8's. " 

LED's will at some point overtake linear fluorescents, but that point is
not now.  Right now, commercially available LEDs are no better than
CFL's, which actually aren't very good.  There are LED's in the lab that
rate over 200 L/W, but you and I can't buy one.
