[Greenbuilding] Off Topic: What car do you suggest?

Hey Scott,

Unfortunately for those looking to buy one, and fortunately for folks like
myself who like to see the value of their cars stay high... you can throw
out the Blue Book on any TDI, especially a B4V ('96 diesel Passat wagon).
Like anything in our market based economy, the value of something is set on
a price the buyer and seller can agree on. I'm not saying that someone
doesn't occasionally "steal" a B4V from someone who doesn't know what they
have, but it's a rare occasion.

I just recently saw one listed for $19K in the PNW, and it'll sell for
somewhere near that eventually. Go ahead and search for one on E-Bay or
AutoTrader and see what the real world market is valuing them at... if you
can find one of these rare, well sought after vehicles at all. I wouldn't
even consider letting either of mine go for less than $10K.

You might not want to quit your daytime job in hopes of making a living off
of selling these as you suggested, there are just not that many around to
make a killing full time.

Ron

1996 Passat TDI wagon retail value excellent condition assumed mileage
of 120,000 = $5875. Not the $12, $10 or even $8 thousand you suggest.

http://www.kbb.com/KBB/UsedCars/PricingReport.aspx?YearId=1996&VehicleCl
ass=UsedCar&ManufacturerId=50&Condition=Excellent&ModelId=309&PriceType=
Retail&VehicleId=9849&Mileage=120000&SelectionHistory=9849%7C25436%7C442
73%7C0%7C0%7C

This price is for my zip code, it is possible that where you live these
cars command a much higher price. If that's the case I should probably
quit my job and commit my time to buying every Passat TDI I can find and
shipping it to your location.

I personally am in communication with hundreds of VW TDI owners, and the

overwhelming majority have owned only TDIs over and over again.

How's this for a "Worst Used Car"? Our 1996 Passat TDI wagon sold new
for
$19K. I was happy to pay $12K for it in 2001. I could sell it today for
$10-$12K, and you'd be lucky to find one in reasonable shape for $8K
(close
to half the original sale price at 12 years old). Kindly show me another

used car that holds that kind of value. I'd say that resale value speaks

volumes for the quality a car can maintain over it's lifetime.
