My initial impression when I read this kind of statement is that the
younger generation is too (insert critical word here) to share their
living space with an elderly parent. Perhaps in western culture we
have parents who are not willing to fit in with their children so the
family generation clash goes both ways. This generational split must
be fairly recent. Which came first, the desire to live separately
or the availability of more housing units?
When I was a child we lived with my grandfather (his house) with no
problems as I vaguely recall. I have three adult children. I could
live with my son, my older daughter possibly, younger daughter no way.
This is a greenbuilding issue as it is basic to the size of housing
we build. Smaller is greener perhaps, but if it means more housing
units that's not green.
