thanks everyone for all your help.
i'll answer a couple of questions folks had....
1) the barrier i have is a waxed paperboard with aluminum laminated to one
side. It is the stuff that paper companies wrap their large paper rolls
with to prevent swings in temp/moisture. I built an origami cup out of the
stuff and filled it with water and after a month of sitting there was no
sign of it discoloring/leaking/anything.... the stuff is about 4' wide and
a roll end is about 5 miles long.... was destined for the landfill.
2) the horizontal furring strips are not continuous on a horiz plane. they
are about 3-4' long and fastened 5 degrees off horizontal to allow for
drainage...
I think my bugs are most likely entering where I haven't filled the little
gap under the windows where the battens come up to the bottom of the sill.
Since the edge of the sill doesn't hang over the edge of the siding
board there is an approx 1/2" vertical opening for bugs to go down into.
There are also a couple of spots where the battens have twisted and opened a
small gap. I'm going to screen those and see what happens now....
as far as air sealing goes i'm baffled by how the bugs get in. we were very
meticulous with air sealing but bugs seem to find the route. Our general
methods were to foam all joints, peel/stick all doors/windows, caulked the
inside joints. It looks like many bugs are coming in through points in the
actual windows (marvin integrity double hungs.) I find many bugs dead under
and in between panes.
Thanks again for all the responses and suggestions,
mike
