[Greenbuilding] Whole-House energy monitoring

I very much agree. But you can approximate this without spending a bunch of
money. I read eight analog meters weekly in and around my house, three
provided by the utilities, and five additional ones that I've installed and
which track various subcategories: toilet & garden for water, fridge &
office for electricity, and the kitchen stove for the fraction of gas that
doesn't go to the water heater. The meters weren't free, but I bet I've
spent less than $250 for the lot of them. I too lust after a USB-whole house
tracking system, but in the meantime this works great.
