[Greenbuilding] Indoor Garden

OK, so this isn't strictly a /building  /question....It is one on 
building an indoor garden. 

I want to start an indoor garden in a south-facing window.  The plan is 
to grow spinach and any other veggie crop I can (in small lots) 
indoors.  This avoids the large-plastic-container-full that goes bad 
before I can possibly use it all (and likely comes from distant places 
where you need sunscreen in January).

Can anyone point me to web resources?  I've looked at a number, but 
there's often conflicting advice and ads for expensive "plant starter 
systems"
