Steve I agree all your points but most requests for snipping fall on
deaf ears.
It astounds me that anyone can be expected to be taken seriously on
topics that revolve around conservation of the planet's resources
while having no sympathy about conserving bandwidth, which is also a
finite resource.
I think you can draw a broad parallel between internet bandwidth and
fossil fuel resources, though one is a depleting resource and the
other a growing one. During the post war era gasoline was a very cheap
good to the wealthy nations and their economies grew as a result. Now
other economies are aspiring to the same standards of energy
consumption but most of the poor will never be able to afford it. Here
we are consuming bandwidth, because its too cheap to meter, but while
we waste it 4 billion souls have no access to it. Why deny those few
on the edge of accessibility, and outwith commercial or academic
access, use of this wonderful thing, by making the sound to noise
ratio so poor the cost of downloads become prohibitive?
I've read the list for 10 years now and get the impression we have far
fewer people contributing from the sharp end.
